Abstract

This study compares Indonesia and Australia's political systems and power structures, focusing on their similarities and differences. Indonesia, a republic with a presidential system, starkly contrasts Australia's constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system. Indonesia's political power is centralized in the executive branch, and Australia's power is distributed between the executive, legislative, and judiciary, following the Westminster system. The method used in the study was qualitative with a comparative study. Data were collected and analyzed through literature studies. The study results show that is political systems and power between Indonesia and Australia have similarities and differences that are not too far apart. 1) from the democratic system, both countries hold regular elections, where every citizen with the right to vote is free to choose their representatives who will become leaders for a certain period. In Indonesia, the political term of office, both legislative and executive, is 5 (five). For Australia, the DPR term of office is 3 (three) years, while the Prime Minister has no limit, depending on the party's vote acquisition during the DPR election. 2) in terms of the division of power, Indonesia and Australia adhere to the Trias Politica system, where there are executive, legislative, and judicial powers. The difference in the political and power systems of the two countries lies in their government systems. Indonesia adheres to a presidential republic system, where the president is both head of state and head of government. Meanwhile, Australia adheres to a constitutional monarchy system with a parliamentary system, where the king is only ceremonial from the British Empire. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is the head of government, who is tasked with implementing executive power and is responsible for the parliament (DPR).
